The Bible speaks often about shepherds as a model for leadership, but few people have experienced being a shepherd. As I’ve studied the Bible, I’ve discovered that good shepherd qualities are similar to six qualities identified as a Level 5 Leader in Jim Collins’ classic book, “Good to Great.”
The first quality Mr. Collins mentioned is humility. Collins discovered that many of the great leaders were those who humbly served their staff rather than ruling over them with pride and arrogance.
1 Peter 5:2 teaches, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve.”
Becoming a good shepherd begins with being humble.
