When I was a young CPA in between jobs, I met a man at a dinner meeting who offered me a job at his CPA firm. When I arrived at his office, I was told that the owner who had hired me was gone.

Puzzled, I informed them that I was supposed to start work that day. One of the accountant’s sneered, “I doubt that’s going to happen.”

Eventually, one of the employees informed me that the owner was an alcoholic and that he wouldn’t remember hiring me. I left grateful for escaping their troubled culture.

Proverbs 17:1 teaches, “Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it than a house full of feasting with strife.”

If you smell trouble in a business, avoid becoming part of their toxic culture.
