Integrity Moments is a 60 second workday devotional that provides business leaders with helpful insight into what the Bible says about our work and how we can fully integrate our faith into our vocational calling.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I’m highlighting some foundational pillars for business that our Founding Fathers established. The fifth pillar is intellectual property rights.

Our Founders were creative and forward thinking when it came to protecting inventors, authors, and artists. The Constitution proclaims, “To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.”

In Ecclesiastes 2:21, Solomon wrote, “For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it.” Solomon viewed leaving intellectual property to others as a misfortune.

The Constitution’s Intellectual Property Clause encouraged innovation and entrepreneurship by allowing inventors to profit from their ideas.
