Derek Thompson wrote an essay in The Atlantic called, “Workism is Making Americans Miserable.” In his essay, he speaks against a concept called workism.
“Workism is the belief that work is not only necessary to economic production, but also the centerpiece of one’s identity and life’s purpose; and the belief that any policy to promote human welfare must always encourage more work.”
Thompson contends that work leads to burnout, and therefore, work should be minimized, with financial support from the government replacing the difference.
Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:22, “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot.”
Although we should never worship our work, we should strive for embracing our vocational calling in a way that brings enjoyment.
