Many communities will offer free land or tax abatement to attract companies to their community. On the surface, it seems wise to accept, and sometimes it might be, but there are other considerations.
Your company’s reputation will be impacted based on how the new community feels they have been treated. Sometimes being generous to your new community will curry more favor.
In Genesis 23, Abraham needs to bury his wife Sarah. The Hittites offer him a burial plot for free, but he refused. In verse 13, Abraham says, “I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”
Abraham wanted to be known for his generosity. If you have a chance to accept gifts from others, carefully consider the long-term consequences.
