My eighth grade football team was led by Coach Hill. He drove each of us to do our very best, with excellence on the field being the ultimate goal. That year we finished the year undefeated and unscored upon.
A year later, we had the same players, playing the same teams, but we barely won a single game. Our ninth grade coach was a nice guy, but winning didn’t seem to be as important to him.
He talked about winning, but his lack of rigor and discipline changed the culture of that team. Our pursuit of excellence vanished.
Proverbs 14:23 teaches, “In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”
If you’re leading a team, are your thoughts and behaviors sending the message you desire?
