There was a surgeon who came in occasionally to the bank where I worked. He would park his new Mercedes by the front door and brag about his car to our staff. He wore lots of jewelry and flashy clothes and loved to talk about his success.
One day this surgeon met with me to request a loan. I discovered that his car was leased, he had recently filed bankruptcy, and his pile of debt was staggering.
As he left, my assistant said, “He must be rich.” All I could say was, “Appearances can be deceiving.”
Proverbs 13:7 says, “One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.”
God knows your status. He’s the only one you really need to impress.
