During 1894, the Pullman Palace Car Company slashed the wages of its employees while requiring them to work 16 hour days. Pullman also controlled the price of housing and necessities through their ownership of the local town.

When George Pullman refused to listen to his employees concerns, the situation escalated into a national shutdown of the railroad system. Federal troops were brought in, resulting in 13 deaths and many injuries.

According to Wikipedia, six days later labor unions were appeased when Labor Day was declared a national holiday. This tragedy began due to injustice in the workplace.

Proverbs 28:3 teaches, “A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.”

On this Labor Day pause and consider any injustices that might be in your workplace.
