Trade deficits haven’t been discussed much until recently. Tariffs have forced business leaders to consider how they might be impacted by the price of foreign goods.
The Bible addresses a potential reason for trade deficits rarely considered – our lack of obedience to God’s commands and principles.
In Deuteronomy 28, God outlines blessings and curses for Israel’s obedience or disobedience. In response to obedience, Deuteronomy 28:12 says, “The Lord will open for you his abundant storehouse, the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.”
Tariffs may or may not help our economy, but business leaders and politicians obeying God’s directives gives us a better likelihood of God’s favor.
