As a foolish young man, I drove my car into a ditch and had no money for a tow. I called a friend’s grandfather for help.
After hearing what happened, he summarized my behavior: “You were proud, drunk, stupid, and you’re broke?” Stung, I answered, “Yes, sir.” He replied,
“Now that you understand your foolishness, let’s get you back on the road.” His rebuke hurt, but his help changed my perspective.
James 5:19-20 says, “Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins” (NIV).
Sometimes genuine care requires speaking truth. A wise rebuke may sting, but it should help restore others.
Thank God for people willing to speak truth and help us get back on the road.
