Q1. When is it time to close the doors on my business?

Many times, people struggle with determining whether or not this business is still their calling and their purpose, and where they should go from there, and whether or not they should still stick to it and try and move forward. There’s an old saying that says, “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, and expect the same result, that’s the definition of insanity.”

Q2. Bankruptcy: Is it Biblical?

Over the years, I received many counseling calls from people that have basically the same question, and that question relates to, “Is bankruptcy Biblical?”

I usually have to go on to describe to them that bankruptcy is a man-made legal process that has enabled us in this day to be able to avoid putting people in debtors’ prisons like when on in Biblical times. God also made provision that that was really what our bankruptcy laws came out of for the Israelites.

Q3. How do I handle an employee that’s not working out?

Many people have called me over the years, trying to walk through how to best handle those types of employee challenges. The first thing you need to discover is the root of the problem. Are they not working out due to behavior issues or due to lack of skill? If it’s due to lack of skill, the problem may be yours rather than the employee.

Q5. What does it mean to be unequally yoked in business?

The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 6, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”

This verse is often applied to marriage, but if you look closely at the context it actually is dealing much more broadly than just marriage. It seems to be just as applicable to business.

But, it begs the question, “What does it mean to be unequally yoked in business? Let me share a story about Jerry to illustrate the point.

Q6. What do I do if my boss is asking me to do something immoral?

Many people are so fearful of losing their job that they are unwilling to do what is right when they are being pressured by a boss. This is a lack of faith in God and His ability to assure that you have a job when necessary.

A friend of mine called me once and asked for advice. His employer was asking him to doctor their books for the bank. When I told him he needed to say no and resign if necessary. He told me, “I was out of work a long time before landing this job. I can’t do that because I may not find a job quick enough.”

Q7. How do I handle a conflict in my workplace?

A business owner told me once, “If I didn’t have people in this organization I wouldn’t have any problems.” Conflict is inevitable in any workplace, but most workplaces become toxic due to the way conflict is handled.

When there is a conflict between two parties most people either, stand and fight, or they flee. Neither is the best approach. To make matters worse many of those who flee a difficult situation have a tendency to want to go gossip to others about the person with whom they are angry.

Jesus taught a much better model in Matthew 18. Although Jesus was giving a model for dealing with a conflict within the context of the church, His principles are appropriate for all.

Q8. Should I hire only Christians?

Many Christian leaders wrestle with whether or not they should hire only Christians in their workplace. The answer is usually, “It depends.”

Jesus taught in Matthew 5, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
